Field Notes is becoming a conversation.

A faster format for a function that's not slowing down

Field Notes is becoming a conversation.

I started Field Notes as a newsletter to share what I was seeing with AI in support: what teams were trying, where things were getting stuck, and how the work was changing.

But AI moves much faster than I ever could, and the best conversations are already happening between people working through similar challenges at the same time. They happen in replies, in meetings, in LinkedIn comments, in webinars, and in side conversations between people comparing notes as things change.

I don't want to be a bottleneck for that. A monthly newsletter can contribute to that conversation, but it is not the best format for it.

So we’re switching things up.

We're moving to Slack 🎉

If your first reaction is “I do not need another Slack workspace,” I totally get it. That is why we set this up differently.

Instead of creating a separate community with a dozen channels to keep up with, Field Notes will live as a single Slack Connect channel inside your company’s existing Slack.

Most support leaders already have Slack open all day. Meeting you there made more sense than asking you to go somewhere new.

One theme per month

When you signed up for this newsletter, we asked one open-ended question: what is your biggest AI challenge right now?

The number one answer, across roles and levels, was keeping up with the pace of change. That is what this next version of Field Notes is built for.

Each month, the channel will focus on one theme. We'll share resources as we find them, bring in practitioners to talk about what they've tried, and host live sessions around the topic. At the end of the month, you vote on what comes next.

Field Notes will stay vendor-agnostic. Nobody's paying to be featured and we're not pushing tools.

Our first theme is Build vs. Buy. Reply to this email and I'll add you to the channel.

A few things to know...

  1. What if I do not want to join Slack but still want the newsletter?
The newsletter will continue as a digest of what happened in the world of AI for support. Slack is where the conversation will happen and where resources will land first.
  2. Does my company need a paid Slack plan?
Yes. Slack Connect requires a paid plan on both sides. For most support leaders at B2B companies, that will not be an issue, but it does mean personal Slack accounts may not be eligible.
  3. Will my Slack admin need to approve this?
Possibly. Some companies auto-approve Slack Connect invitations, while others require admin review. If your company has a process for external channels, it is worth giving your IT team a heads-up.
  4. Who gets access?
Current Field Notes subscribers get first dibs. After that, we will onboard new members in batches. If you are not a subscriber yet, you can still apply and we will add you to the next batch.
  5. What if I go quiet for a while?
No pressure to post every day. But if you've been inactive for a while, we may pass your spot to someone waiting to get in. You're always welcome to rejoin when the timing is better.
  6. How big is this channel?
We are starting small and figuring out the right size as we go. Big enough that you will hear perspectives outside your own, small enough that you will recognize names. We will adjust as we learn what works.
